Friends are lost, my kids forget what I look like and spreadsheets are created with formulas that I don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n<p>The sad thing is it\u2019s kind of pointless. I always know what single album made me all warm and fuzzy inside before I start down that path of complexity. So let\u2019s not drag this out any longer and get down to business.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Atlas Moth - An Ache for the Distance\" alt=\"The Atlas Moth - An Ache for the Distance\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/atlas-moth-an-ache-for-the-distance.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>01. The Atlas Moth &#8211; <em>An Ache for the Distance<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>If there is one album you need to hear from 2011, it\u2019s <em>An Ache for the Distance<\/em> by <a title=\"The Atlas Moth - Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/theatlasmoth.bandcamp.com\/\">the Atlas Moth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The band covers a stunning range of styles on <em>An Ache for the Distance<\/em> \u2013 sludge, post rock, black metal, jazz, doom and psychedelic rock to name a few. But in no way does the album feel like a patched together mishmash of all those influences. Much like Faith No More did on 1992\u2019s <em>Angel Dust<\/em>, the Atlas Moth has managed to channel the diverse personalities of each member into a single cohesive recording that made choosing it as album of the year a no brainer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 400px; height: 100px;\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=3507120477\/size=venti\/linkcol=c32f25\/\" height=\"100\" width=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Tombs \u2013 Path of Totality\" alt=\"Tombs \u2013 Path of Totality\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/tombs-path-of-totality.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>02. Tombs \u2013 <em>Path of Totality<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I have to admit that despite what I said above about it being clear what my top pick was, <a title=\"Tombs Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/tombsbklyn.bandcamp.com\/\">Tombs\u2019<\/a> <em>Path of Totality<\/em> could very easily have been sitting in that position; dark, atmospheric and utterly devastating. I can\u2019t stop listening to this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-763\" title=\"Goes Cube - In Tides and Drifts\" alt=\"Goes Cube - In Tides and Drifts\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/goes-cube-in-tides-and-drifts.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>03. Goes Cube &#8211; <em>In Tides and Drifts<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>As with 2009\u2019s <em>Another Day Has Passed<\/em>, <a title=\"Goes Cube - In Tides and Drfts at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/goes-cube\/in-tides-and-drifts\/12420582\/:\">Goes Cube<\/a> drop track after track of infectious post punk driven noise rock that demands repeated listens. Album highlights \u201dThe Homes Of\u201d and the three part \u201cThe Story Is The Story Begins\u201d, \u201cThe Story Is The Story Goes\u201d and \u201cThe Story Is The Story Ends\u201d make a strong argument for nudging this <em>In Tides and Drifts<\/em> even higher on this list.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"KEN mode - Venerable\" alt=\"KEN mode - Venerable\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ken-mode-venerable.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>04. KEN mode &#8211; <em>Venerable<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I like noise rock. I really like noise rock with riffs that will rip your face off. Does that float your boat as well? Then point your face at <em>Venerable<\/em> by <a title=\"KEN mode Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/kenmode.bandcamp.com\/album\/venerable\">KEN mode<\/a>. As your life coach, I am confident you will be pleased with the results.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Witch Mountain \u2013 South of Salem\" alt=\"Witch Mountain \u2013 South of Salem\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/witch-mountain-sout-of-salem.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"547\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>05. Witch Mountain \u2013 <em>South of Salem<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I listened to this for the first time less than a week ago and it is number five on this list. Yeah \u2013 it\u2019s that good. No small part of that is the addition of vocalist Uta Plotkin to the line-up. <a title=\"Witch Mountain Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/witchmountain.bandcamp.com\/releases\">Witch Mountain<\/a> was a lethal dose of doom before, but now with Uta\u2019s powerful voice wailing over Rob Wrong\u2019s riffs, the results are simply stunning. Get on this shit now.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Today is the Day \u2013 Pain is a Warning\" alt=\"Today is the Day \u2013 Pain is a Warning\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/today-is-the-day-pain-is-a-warning.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>06. Today is the Day \u2013 <em>Pain is a Warning<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>With <em>Pain is a Warning<\/em>, <a title=\"Todat is the Day MySpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/todayistheday\">Today is the Day<\/a> is a fine tuned killing machine. Well, except when they slow things down for a couple of numbers (hey, even killing machines like a slow dance every now and then). Easily the most focused, direct and dare I say accessible album of the band\u2019s catalogue. If you aren\u2019t down with TITD main man Steve Austin already, this is the perfect place to get on board.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Junius \u2013 Reports from the Threshold of Deathh\" alt=\"Junius \u2013 Reports from the Threshold of Death\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/junius-reports-from-the-threshold-of-death.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>07. Junius \u2013 <em>Reports from the Threshold of Death<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Junius MySpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/junius\">Junius<\/a> heavy up their post rock styles on <em>Reports from the Threshold of Death<\/em>, but the end result is far from brutal. So if you\u2019re not grim, KVLT or don\u2019t even like most of the noise I go on about here, this is the one you should check out. Your moms will even like this.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-764\" title=\"Altar of Plagues \u2013 Mammal\" alt=\"Altar of Plagues \u2013 Mammal\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/altar-of-plagues-mammal.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"553\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>08. Altar of Plagues \u2013 <em>Mammal<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I was late getting in the game with <a title=\"Altar of Plauges MySpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/altarofplagues\">Altar of Plagues<\/a> previous long player <em>White Tomb<\/em>. But if I hadn`t slept on that, it easily could have toppled <em>Axe to Fall<\/em> by Converge as album of the year in 2009. <em>Mammal<\/em> may be rolling in at number eight, but it\u2019s still the best black metal album you\u2019re going to hear this year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-765\" title=\"Blood Ceremony \u2013 Living With the Ancients\" alt=\"Blood Ceremony \u2013 Living With the Ancients\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/blood-ceremony-living-with-the-ancients.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>09. Blood Ceremony \u2013 <em>Living With the Ancients<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I have a problem with <a title=\"Blood Ceremony - Living With the Ancients at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/blood-ceremony\/living-with-the-ancients\/12423822\/:\">Blood Ceremony<\/a>. They play retro styled doom, praise Satan, own a flute and got Sanford Parker to record <em>Living With the Ancients<\/em>. Don\u2019t see any problems there? Actually, me neither. What I have a problem with is they haven\u2019t gotten their Canadian asses out here to Halifax so I can lose my mind while they work their black magic live. My calendar is wide open in 2012. Just saying&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-766\" title=\"Batillus - Furnace\" alt=\"Batillus - Furnace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/batillus-furnace.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>10. Batillus &#8211; <em>Furnace<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Batillus Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/batillus.bandcamp.com\/album\/furnace\">Batillus<\/a> may be number 10 on this list. But they are actually number 20 when it comes to the order in which I finished writing all of these. So let\u2019s just keep it simple: doom + sludge + industrial + atmospheric = Batillus. If your brain can handle that math, then you will like <em>Furnace<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-767\" title=\"Subrosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones\" alt=\"Subrosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/subrosa-no-help-for-the-mighty-ones.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>11. Subrosa &#8211; <em>No Help for the Mighty Ones<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Over at <a title=\"Show No Mercy - Pitchfork\" href=\"http:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/show-no-mercy\/\">Show No Mercy&#8217;s<\/a> year end list, Brandon Stosuy drops points of reference like \u201cdoom-pop\u201d and \u201cstoner-folk sludge\u201d when writing about <a title=\"Subrosa MySpace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/subrosatheatre\">Subrosa&#8217;s<\/a> <em>No Help for the Mighty Ones<\/em>. Sounds good to me Brandon. So I`m gonna jack your styles and go with that too. No sense reinventing the wheel, right?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-768\" title=\"Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street\" alt=\"Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/hammers-of-misfortune-17th-street.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"541\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>12. Hammers of Misfortune &#8211; <em>17th Street<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Lots have been said about <em>17<sup>th<\/sup> Street\u2019s<\/em> retro metal styles and Joe Hutton\u2019s set of pipes. But what sold me on this album was that it pretty much sounds like Ludicra minus the black metal. Seeing as Ludicra went tits up this year and <a title=\"Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/hammers-of-misfortune\/17th-street\/12803856\/:\">Hammers of Misfortune<\/a> are led by former Ludicra member John Cobbett, I guess all is not lost after all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-776\" title=\"Mastodon \u2013 The Hunter\" alt=\"Mastodon \u2013 The Hunter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/mastodon-the-hunter.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>13. <strong>Mastodon \u2013 <em>The Hunter<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Did you hear the version of <em>the Hunter<\/em> with Bruce Dickenson singing on it? What? That never happened? Well if it did, then it would have been bad news for numbers 12 to 1 on this list. But apparently it didn\u2019t. So for now I guess <a title=\"Mastodon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mastodonrocks.com\/\">Mastodon<\/a> can sit nice and comfortable at number 13.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-775\" title=\"Trap Them - Darker Handcraft\" alt=\"Trap Them - Darker Handcraft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/trap-them-darker-handcraft.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"541\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>14. Trap Them &#8211; <em>Darker Handcraft<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Remember the time Converge got on top of Entombed\u2019s shoulders and challenged Black Flag and Disfear to a chicken fight? No? Well neither does <a title=\"Trap Them - Darker Handcraft at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/trap-them\/darker-handcraft\/12381070\/:\">Trap Them<\/a>. What\u2019s that got to do with a chicken fight? Nothing. I just thought it sounded like a cool idea and the resulting carnage would sound like <em>Darker Handcraft<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-774\" title=\"Liturgy \u2013 Aesthetica\" alt=\"Liturgy \u2013 Aesthetica\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/liturgy-aesthetica.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>15. Liturgy \u2013 <em>Aesthetica<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Lliturgy - Aesthethica at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/liturgy\/aesthethica\/12552440\/:\">Liturgy<\/a> tends to only have one mode, which consists of repetitive, relentless riffing and blasting. Sometimes that hurts my head. But most of the time, I find it quite refreshing. I have no idea which of those two categories this falls under for you. But whatever &#8211; just listen to it <em>Aesthetica<\/em> anyway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-773\" title=\"Machine Head - Unto the Locust\" alt=\"Machine Head - Unto the Locust\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/machine-head-unto-the-locust.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>16. Machine Head &#8211; <em>Unto the Locust<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I was stoked when <a title=\"Machine Head\" href=\"http:\/\/machinehead1.com\/\">Machine Head<\/a> nailed it two times in a row with <em>Through the Ashes of Empires<\/em> and <em>the Blackening<\/em>. But I was doubtful they would be able to do it again when they dropped <em>Unto the Locust<\/em>. Boy was I wrong. You know how we all go on about the classic Metallica trilogy now? Give these three albums a few years and we\u2019ll be blowing the same smoke up Rob Flynn\u2019s ass.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-772\" title=\"Vastum - Carnal Law\" alt=\"Vastum - Carnal Law\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/vastum-carnal-law.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>17. Vastum &#8211; <em>Carnal Law<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>I read Swedish Death Metal and Choosing Death, but I\u2019m far from a certified expert when it comes to the genre. But even a newbie like me can see that <a title=\"Vastum Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/vastum.bandcamp.com\/\">Vastum<\/a> know a thing or two about crafting crusty, thick and infectious death metal. If you like crusty, thick and infectious death metal, then you already have this album. If you don\u2019t like crusty, thick and infectious death metal, then email me and I&#8217;ll try my best to help with directions to the blog you were actually looking for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-771\" title=\"In Solitude - The World.The Flesh.The Devil\" alt=\"In Solitude - The World.The Flesh.The Devil\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/in-solitude-the-world-the-flesh-the-devil.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"541\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>18. In Solitude &#8211; <em>The World.The Flesh.The Devil<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Much like Blood Ceremony, <a title=\"In Solitude - The World.The Flesh.The Devil at eMusic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/listen\/#\/album\/in-solitude\/the-world-the-flesh-the-devil\/12545876\/:\">In Solitude<\/a> is here to spread the word of our dark overlord. However these Swedes have chosen to skip the Jethro Tull styles of my Canadian comrades and worship at the altar of Mercyful Fate instead. I\u2019m fine with that. Are they evil? Why yes, they are.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-770\" title=\"Shooting Guns \u2013 Born To Deal In Magic: 1952-1976\" alt=\"Shooting Guns \u2013 Born To Deal In Magic: 1952-1976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/shooting-guns-born-to-deal-in-magic.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>19. Shooting Guns \u2013 <em>Born To Deal In Magic: 1952-1976<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Black Sabbath got knocked up by Hawkwind? The baby lives in Canada and goes by the name <a title=\"Shooting Guns Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/shootingguns.bandcamp.com\/album\/born-to-deal-in-magic-1952-1976\">Shooting Guns<\/a>? They make tripped out, catchy, synth infused instrumental music? I\u2019m on it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-769\" title=\"Toxic Holocaust \u2013 Conjure and  Command\" alt=\"Toxic Holocaust \u2013 Conjure and  Command\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heretodestroy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/toxic-holocaust-conjure-and-command.jpg\" width=\"545\" height=\"544\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>20. Toxic Holocaust \u2013 <em>Conjure and\u00a0 Command<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Conjure and Command<\/em> may not have gotten <a title=\"Toxic Holocaust Bandcamp\" href=\"http:\/\/toxicholocaust.bandcamp.com\/\">Toxic Holocaust<\/a> quite as much praise as 2008\u2019s <em>An Overdose of Death<\/em>, but it\u2019s the preferred choice around these parts.
